The highly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 tournament has officially kicked off at the Esports bo6 bot lobbies World Cup 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Between July 24 and 27, sixteen of the world’s top Call of Duty teams are laying it all on the line in pursuit of the prestigious title and a share of the massive US $1.8 million prize pool.

This marks the first time that Black Ops 6 is featured at the EWC main roster event, following the enormous success of Modern Warfare 3 at the inaugural 2024 tournament. The new title brings with it fresh mechanics such as omnimovement, new weapons, and revamped strategies—forcing teams to quickly adapt to a new meta under tournament pressure.

The roster of teams is impressive—a mix of established powerhouses from the CDL (Call of Duty League) and elite Challengers squads eager to prove themselves. FaZe Clan enters as defending EWC champions, and OpTic Gaming, 100 Thieves, G2 Esports, Cloud9, Team Heretics, KOI, Gentle Mates, Team Falcons, Vancouver Surge, Boston Breach, OMiT, Project 7, Team WaR, Team Orchid, and FiveFears round out the field. Notably, the Carolina Royal Ravens were originally invited but disqualified for exceeding allowed roster changes, and were replaced by FiveFears in what became a high-profile controversy highlighting the importance of compliance off the battlefield as well as on it.¹¹⁷

The competition is structured into two distinct phases: a GSL-format group stage and a single-elimination playoff bracket. In the opening stage, the 16 teams are divided into four groups of four. Each group uses a double-elimination format, where all matches are best-of-five. The top two teams from each group advance to the playoffs. From there, the eight teams face off in single-elimination best-of-five matches, with the Grand Final being a best-of-seven showdown. This format amplifies the pressure—every map counts, and there’s no safety net.¹²⁷

The prize distribution reflects the tournament’s weight: $600,000 for champion, approximately $320,000 for runner-up, $160,000 each for two semifinalists, down to smaller payouts for teams exiting early. Team performance also earns Club Championship points. These points count toward a massive $27 million cross-title prize for top-performing organizations over the entire tournament series.¹²⁷

Offstage, the event has already stirred intense debate. In a rare move, the EWC has introduced a rule allowing in-game coaching. Announced on July 17, this rule permits coaches to communicate with players during Hardpoint and Control matches, and between rounds in Search & Destroy. This breaks with more than a decade of tradition in Call of Duty competition, where coaches were usually sidelined during live play. Some viewed the last-minute rule change as disruptive and contentious. Sam “Octane” Larew, 2022 world champion, warned against making this an EWC standard, arguing that it undermines split-second decision-making, while Christopher “Parasite” Duarte praised it as leveling the playing field and raising the ceiling of competitive play.¹⁶¹⁶

As play begins at EWC Arena 1 in Riyadh, all eyes are watching to see how the new game mechanics, unique format, and coaching experiment will shape the tournament. The line between veteran dominance and underdog surprise is razor-thin. Powerhouse teams like FaZe Clan and OpTic Gaming have continuity and experience, but the fresh energy from Challengers teams like FiveFears and Team WaR could bring major upsets.

Black Ops 6 demands adaptability, raw mechanical skill, and strategic innovation.
