Historical marketing of yams has led to the mislabeling of sweet potatoes in the United States. The growers named the term yams to differentiate softer sweet potatoes with orange flesh and firmer ones with whites. Real yams can hardly be found in ordinary supermarkets, but can be found at the African, Caribbean, or Asian markets. This habitual classification has resulted in much confusion despite the fact that yams and sweet potatoes are totally different plant species.
